The tent of the last chance

Each year in St. Petersburg, the winter kills dozens and dozens of people who succumb to frost or diseases caused by the climate (cold, humidity, wind, rain).

Many of them are severely hurt by the weather, gangrene, amputation, pneumonia. These homeless, undocumented immigrants can not even get to a hospital for treatment due to inexistence of identity documents and vehicle transport.

In January 2007, faced with this tragic situation and without state or ecclesiastical support, “Nochlezhka” decided to organize itself and to install an additional temporary refuge. We bought an heatable army tent of about 60 square meters able to welcome and accommodate up to 60 people. There, homeless can receive a hot meal, a bed, warm clothes and a medical consultation.

The operation was reiterated in 2008.  This time, the city gave a support which has permitted the acquisition of a second tent.

Today in St Petersburg, the terrible frosts are back, the tents are once again essentials to brave the winter. Facing the lack of financial resources and supports state, Nochlezhka can only pitch one tent for the moment as you can read in the “Nochlezhka“Gazette.

NSS will try to do his best to allow the installation of a second survival center.
